An international phone card or calling card is a card which allows the caller to call from a number of countries around the world to any destination in the world. This destination could equally well be within the same country. International calling cards come in both monthly billed or credit varieties and pre-paid forms. International phone cards are routinely used when the cost is cheaper than the local service provider in that country. When you make a call, the total cost of the call (which is often made up of several components) is accumulated to the card.
When purchasing an international prepaid calling card, it is vitally important to verify that service is available in the country from which you will be calling. (Your destination country if you are a tourist or travelling on business).The reason is that a number of international calling card carriers have agreements to provide service in a limited number of countries. The rational is complex but in the end basically boils down to the volume and expense of setting up service using an independent international carrier.
It is equally important to check the rates from the origination country. These rates are often extremely expensive. When you are checking make sure you check the rate in the correct direction. For example a call from the US to say France might be $0.06/minute and could be $0.35/min from France to the US. The reason is that the French leg has to be paid to a French carrier in France.
If you intend to use a mobile phone with your calling card, you should verify firstly that service is available on your cellphone in the country you intend to travel to. You should also verify that there are access numbers for your international calling card as well. Remember you may be paying mobile airtime on top of the calling card cost. In international countries it is common for mobile phones to operate and be charged a "roaming charge". This roaming charge can be very expensive. Please check your contracts.
